The Nawabs of Malerkotla were of "Kurd" descent who came originally from the province of "Sherwan" and settled in the town of Sherwan north of the Persia and after settling for a time in Afghanistan near Ghazni came to India and settled at Maler, the old capital of state in 1442. Originally they held positions of trust under the Lodhi and the Moghal emperors. As the Moghal Empire began to sink into decay, they gradually became independent. The known coinage of the state starts from Nawab Umar Khan.
